Archduke Ludwig Salvator is remembered by a bronze bust in the former cloister gardens of the Cartoixa in Valldemossa. A member of the Habsburg family, he devoted much of his life to studying the Balearic Islands. His extensive work, Die Balearen, recorded island landscapes, wildlife and ways of life, earning a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878. His connection with the surrounding countryside also survives in the Camí de s’Arxiduc, the mountain path he designed above Valldemossa.
